His name Saltus is ancient Latin for "Forest" or "Woodland," and he wears the title well. Carved from a massive piece of reclaimed cottonwood bark found on the shores of Grapevine Lake, the deep ridges of the bark allowed for a high-relief carving that emphasizes shadow and depth. A dry-brush technique with white pigment catches the high points of the texture, giving the wood a weathered, almost petrified appearance. Like timber that has survived a century of winters.

About the Maker
I am trained in traditional carving techniques at one of Europe's most prestigious woodcarving schools in the Austrian Alps. My work draws from centuries of methods used in European churches and royal residences. I create from that lineage in my studio in Grapevine, Texas.
